If you’re looking for a large sized hound dog that is both versatile and loveable, look no further than the black and tan coonhound.  A beautiful breed with a shiny predominately black coat and somewhat baggy skin, this dog is very mellow and generally quite the people pleaser. With big brown eyes and and a classic hound dog expression, they can be real heartbreakers. While too large to be confined to an apartment, they are generally inactive and calm indoors.  All they require is just a good daily walk or run or a decently sized fenced yard to romp in. Like all hounds, black and tan coonhounds need to be leashed in open areas near traffic or they will take off following any interesting scent and possibly be injured in the process.

First recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1945, they quickly became one of the most popular hound breeds. There are two types of black and tan coonhounds, a working strain and a bench or show variety. As a working dog, these hounds will track anything from raccoons to bears.  Show strains are slightly less energetic than field lines as they are not specifically bred for the hunt.  Standards for both types dictate that they should be no more than 27 inches tall and 75 to 80 pounds, males generally being slightly larger than females.  Due to their long legs and somewhat lazy nature indoors, these dogs are prone to hip problems if allowed to overeat. This makes it particularly important to watch their diet and not allow them to become overweight.

Black and tan coonhounds are very alert, though they are not necessarily the brightest of the hound breeds – which can be a good thing as they don’t get bored and spend their time trying to figure out how to escape the fence like other hounds are prone to doing.  They love people and are good with active families, particularly those with older children who will handle them gently. Care should be taken in acclimating them to smaller children who may be too rough, as these dogs can be a bit shy.  While not normally aggressive, black and tans can be protective of their people and make good watchdogs. They are large enough that they may deter intruders with their loud voice.  As with all hounds, they can get pretty raucous and like to hear themselves bay and bark.

If you want a good coonhunting dog or just a lovable family pet, the black and tan coonhound may make a good choice, particularly in rural areas.  These dogs are generally adaptable to all sorts of terrains and climates and almost worshipful of their owners – this is the gentle dog that is commonly associated with laying on the porch during hot Southern summers. They are not known for being terribly demanding or high maintenance pets.  Given plenty of human companionship to keep them happy, black and tan coonhounds will normally serve as devoted companions for about ten to twelve years.
